Tennessee RiverLine, Gamma Sigma Delta, and One Health Host Successful Kayak Excursion & Third Creek Clean-Up

Knoxville, TN — On behalf of the Tennessee RiverLine, Gamma Sigma Delta, and One Health, we are pleased to report the success of the Kayak Excursion & Third Creek Clean-Up, which took place on May 27, 2025. The event was a continuation of our shared commitment to preserving the health of local waterways and the biodiversity they support.

In the fall of 2025, the Tennessee Chapter of Gamma Sigma Delta, in partnership with One Health and the Tennessee RiverLine, hosted a kayak clean-up along First and Third Creeks—two important tributaries that flow into the Tennessee River. These creeks are home to a wide array of species, including over 100 species of freshwater mussels and 270 species of fish, some of which are found nowhere else in the world.

During the clean-up, 15 volunteers worked together to remove trash from these waterways. The team collected 20 large bags of waste, including Styrofoam, cans, plastics, and other debris. They also cleared several large, hard-to-reach items, removing a total of 400 pounds of trash from the creeks. This effort is a vital part of our ongoing commitment to protect the natural environment and wildlife of the region.

“Taking care of our campus and the surrounding community is central to our mission,” said Dr. Bruno Pedreira, Service Chair from Gamma Sigma Delta. “This clean-up not only benefits the local environment but also encourages our members to be actively engaged in preserving our natural resources.”

With the success of this event, we are excited to continue our creek clean-ups in the future and invite others to join us in making a difference. Whether you’re an experienced kayaker or new to paddling, these clean-ups provide an opportunity to connect with others and help maintain the health of our waterways.

We would like to thank all of the volunteers who participated in this important event and look forward to continuing our work together to protect and preserve our local rivers and creeks.
